Increased conformational rigidity of humic substances by oxidative biomimetic catalysis

2005

A synthetic water-soluble meso-tetra(2,6-dichloro-3-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrinate of iron(III) chloride, Fe(TDCPPS)Cl, was employed as a biomimetic catalyst in the oxidative coupling of terrestrial humic materials. High-performance size-exclusion chromatography (HPSEC), solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (CPMAS-(13)C NMR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy (DRIFT) were used to follow conformational and structural changes brought about in different humic materials by the oxidative coupling. Increase in apparent weight-average molecular weight (Mw(a)) occurred invariably for all humic substances with the oxidative polymerization catalyzed …

Environmental Management Systems (Ems) - Control Instrument of the Impact of the Organization Activities on the Environment

2015

Abstract Due to the ability to create and use technology, the human being has found various ways to transform the resources of the Earth in all sorts of new materials, equipment and energy sources. At least since the last industrial revolution until now, each generation has added more technology to the received legacy, but at the same time, left the planet in a far more degraded state than the inherited condition. Within these changes, small and medium enterprises (SME) in their capacity as pillars of the economic development of a nation, have been compelled to change their previous strategies. Implementing an Environmental Management Systems (EMS) can be seen as the only way to connect the…

Aspetti valutativi nella costruzione del sistema informativo per la gestione ambientale dell'azienda

2013

This paper deals with the construction of an environmental management oriented corporate information system. A company point of view is adopted and a managerial approach is integrated with an evaluative approach. The work provides a critical reflection on the nature of corporate environmental responsibility and on the contribution of evaluation discipline for environment oriented improving of the traditional economic and financial corporate information system. Corporate management recognizes the principle that governs the activity of a company in the creation of economic value. In production processes, the neg-entropic aspects − relating to produced goods and other tangible and intangible b…

POEMS: A Case Study of an Italian Wine-Producing Firm

2006

Over the last decade, researchers paid much attention to concepts such as Design for Environment, Extended Producer Responsibility, Responsible Chain Management, and Eco-design. Many management tools and standards (such as EMAS, ISO 14001, LCA, EPD, Ecolabel) have been developed to support companies in the evaluation and management of their environmental performance and to pursue continual environmental improvement. The more recent development of the aforesaid fields looks at interorganizational environmental management. Such an approach can complement the more traditional intraorganizational corporate environmental management approaches and tools. A typical example of this new trend is the…

Recognizing definitive stakeholders in corporate environmental management

2010

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to present four examples of stakeholder relationships related to issues of corporate environmental management (CEM) and analyze them based on the model of Mitchell et al. (1997).Design/methodology/approachSecondary data are used in the case studies.FindingsThe four cases presented show that basically any stakeholder can become definitive over time in the complex network of stakeholders with mutual relationships. The definitive stakeholders in CEM are no longer merely the NGOs and policymakers but now include many diverse groups such as customers, locals and suppliers.Research limitations/implicationsThese case studies cannot be generalized, but they could…

Wild and cultivated mushrooms as a model of sustainable development

2013

The natural resources are currently overexploited and since 1992 the Conference of Rio de Janeiro has focused on sustainable development to safeguard our planet for future generations. The Fungi kingdom includes producers of goods and services for ecosystems and organisms widely used in the food industry. Besides, macrofungi are recognized as nontimber forest products and could be utilized as agents of environmental management through weed biocontrol and environmental improvement. Moreover, the cultivation of fungi, in particular truffles, can provide an important income in agroecosystems, especially in marginal areas, along with the development of new technologies to produce novel products…

Practitioners’ Perceptions of Co-Product Allocation Methods in Biorefinery Development—A Case Study of the Austrian Pulp and Paper Indust…

2022

The utilization of coproducts is a strategy that can be applied to increase the economic and environmental performance of industrial processes and thus reach an objective targeted in several environmental policies. In multi-output production processes, allocation needs to be performed to assess the products’ environmental and economic performance. It is crucial to choose an adequate allocation method, because this choice has been shown to strongly influence overall outcomes. Consequently, rash choices can lead to poor decision-making. Various ways to apply and combine allocation methods can be found in the academic literature, but it is often difficult to find sufficient guidance on how to …
